Home care provides non-medical support in a person’s home, such as help with bathing, dressing, meals, companionship, light housekeeping, and errands—allowing individuals to remain safely at home. If the care recipient has a primary family caregiver, then a home care agency can provide a break for the primary caregiver, allowing for much needed respite.
Licensed home care (formal terminology is Personal Assistance Service or PAS) is non-medical and focuses on daily living support, can be ongoing, and services are determined by the client and family. Home health and hospice involve skilled medical services, ordered by a physician, provided by nurses, physical therapists and social workers, is usually paid for by health insurance, and it is typically a temporary service for intermittent needs.
